Respite Caregivers / Providers

We asked disability respite caregivers:
Why do you enjoy working with these kids or why did you decide to provide respite?

“I have a sibling with a disability and so it’s always been something I’ve been around and exposed to. I knew ever since he was diagnosed with epilepsy that getting to know and creating relationships with this community was something I’ve always been passionate about. getting the experience; whether it’s behavioral, physical, medical, or mental has changed me for the better. I will always dedicate myself to those who need it and hopefully get to help more kids in the future.”

“Working with birkley was one of the greatest joys of my life. she is so strong, brave and loving. Working with birkley helped me grow so much as a person, caregiver and friend. I loved watching Birkley’s progress and how close we became. I truly believe helping others is the way to feel fulfilled and content in life. I am grateful for my experience with birk and I will always treasure her.”

“I wear a lot of hats – educator, graduate student, therapist – but being a respite provider has to be my favorite. Not only have i received invaluable experience providing care for a diverse range of clients, but I’ve made life long relationships and became a part of someone’s family. Some of my favorite memories have been spending time with my beloved client, going to the fair, on walks to watch the leaves change and giggling while watching movies together during an overnight. I am forever grateful for my experience and I plan to continue to be a part time provider for the foreseeable future.”

“When I was growing up, my best friend’s brother had down syndrome, and through that friendship I got to be part of his world in a really special way. It made a big impact on me. In high school, I became a student mentor and stayed involved with the program all four years, which really sparked my passion for working with individuals with disabilities. Also during that time the teacher at the school wasn’t the best, and I could tell the students had so much potential that was being wasted and I felt that I could be a change for students in the future.”

Families

“Just Like Mom connected us to a fantastic caregiver for my elderly mom! She is a go getter, compassionate, and trustworthy. The process was so easy and we feel so blessed to have this resource for the future, too.”
