When my daughter was born, I had no idea of the services and supports in place here in Colorado and that’s another reason why we lost thousands I mean thousands and thousands of dollars in the early days. We finally got to see the light when Birkley was about 4 or 5 years old and when someone finally mentioned, “hey, have you looked into Medicaid waivers?” At that time we were paying everything out of pocket because in our old county, someone else told me (someone who helped us with services) that we probably wouldn’t get approved. Well, she was wrong!!! and once we were approved after tons of paperwork, it’s like our world changed overnight.
If you aren’t familiar, a Medicaid waiver allows you to access Medicaid even if your salary is over the typical Medicaid limit. So, if you have a child with unique or special needs and need support, financial support, and more access to care and services, be sure to reach out to your county Case Management agency! You never know, you may be eligible and if not there are so many other resources out there for you and some that can help financially.
**** Keeping Medicaid for the disability community is everything, so keep sharing and sending in those letters to your senators!!
